Search Engine Promotion and Optimization Resources

Before you start promoting your web site, you need to determine what keyphrases to use. Most people just use a ton of keywords in their site and then wonder why they have no visitors. To get noticed by the search engines you have to come up with the appropriate keyphrases. Start by writing down all the phrases that you think someone would type in when doing a search for information relating to your website. Then try them out on the search engines.

Here's a great resource for finding effective keyphrases for your website, Yahoo Search Marketing. At the bottom of the page is a Resources section that offers tools such as the Keyword Selector Tool, which will give you more detail specifc keyphrases and how many hits they get, and the View Bids Tool, to check the current status on the use of specific keywords and how they are being used.

Once you have identified your keyphrases and your website is ready for the search engines, it's time to submit it.

Do not submit your website to often, the search engines will consider it spam. I submit my site when it's updated with new content or once a month. There is no need to submit it every day, once a week may be ok, but I wouldn't risk it. The first thing that I recommend you do is Add your URL to Google. No matter what you read or what anyone says, you HAVE TO add your site to Google manually.

The sites below will submit your site for free, but nothing beats doing it 'by hand', the old fashion way. Be aware that many of the major search engines now require verification through email or by using codes, so make sure you use a valid email address when using the sites below. .
